The pandemic has accelerated flexible and hybrid working. Many who never previously worked from home have found the WFH experience to be helpful – less time spent in travelling, an ability to concentrate and some element of autonomy over their working day. However, from an employer’s perspective this gives rise to issues of health and safety, the provision of technology, the control of data and the supervision of staff. In addition, training and informal mentoring and support are less straightforward when people are not in an office environment. The old approach of expecting people to work 9-5 and to have their place of employment as designated by their employer has gone forever. What are the new expectations for workers who wish to have flexibility? What about workers in the so-called gig economy? How can job security and conditions of work be protected for casual arrangements and how can careers be built in this environment? This session will consider the evolving nature of employment rights and responsibilities in our changed world.
