Lawyers in Northern Ireland have been urged to remain vigilant in defending access to justice and the rule of law during a visit to Belfast by Steven Thiru, President of the Commonwealth Lawyers Association (CLA).

Steven visited Belfast at the invitation of the Law Society of Northern Ireland to discuss growing threats to access to justice across Commonwealth countries.

Speaking to local lawyers and students, he encouraged the next generation of legal professionals to remain vigilant, defend accountability and uphold the rule of law. He also called on them to speak up in solidarity with colleagues facing pressure or threats, both at home and abroad.

During his one-day visit to Belfast, Mr Thiru also met with Dame Siobhan Keegan, the Lady Chief Justice, and Dame Brenda King, the Attorney General.

Brian Speers, a member of the Law Society Council and Past president of the CLA, said the visit was an important opportunity to engage with future lawyers. noting that “We are deeply grateful to Steven Thiru for taking time out of his busy schedule to visit Belfast and address the next generation of lawyers on the need to defend access to justice and the rule of law”.
