CLA News / Reflections from the Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference 2025 Barbados by CLA Americas VP, Sophie Stanbrook
Attending the Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference in Bridgetown this year as an observer for the Commonwealth Lawyers Association has been both a professional privilege and a personal pleasure. After thirty years in practice, I’ve learned that moments like these — when parliamentarians (and some lawyers!) gather to exchange ideas about the future of governance — remind us why the rule of law matters far beyond the courtroom.
The theme, “Parliaments and People: Strengthening Democracy for the Next Generation,” struck a particular chord. The discussions ranged from the practical challenges of digital regulation and climate resilience to the pressing need for broader youth and gender representation. What stood out was not only the diversity of the Commonwealth, but the shared determination to make democracy more responsive and inclusive.
For the CLA, being present in this space allows us to listen and to learn — to observe how policy and legislation evolve in dialogue with lived realities across member states. It was also an opportunity to deepen relationships with parliamentarians who, like us, are committed to accountability, fairness, and good governance.
Barbados proved a fitting host: small in size, yet confident in voice and vision. The warmth of its people, and the clarity with which its leaders speak about regional cooperation and sustainable development, left a strong impression. The ever impressive Honourable Mia Mottley KC gave a passionate speech to an enthralled audience.

As the conference came to a close, the attendees left with a renewed sense of purpose — that our collective commitment to democracy and justice remains the Commonwealth’s greatest strength, and one worth safeguarding with both conviction and care.
