The Commonwealth Lawyers Association (CLA) conveys its deepest condolences and sympathies to the people of Malawi on the devastating loss of life and property incurred as result of Cyclone Freddy sweeping through the country. CLA President Dr. Peter Maynard KC writes –

“My heartfelt condolences go to those who lost their loved ones, and my profound empathy and concern is extended to those left displaced by the devastating effects of cyclone Freddy. I am dismayed by the destructive impact of this cyclone on communities in Malawi (especially the flood ravaged areas in the south) and Mozambique, and the ongoing reports that the death toll will continue to rise and that the threat of cholera may spread because of inadequate sanitation in the camps.

The enormous scale of this catastrophe calls for international solidarity and aid, especially those from global institutions, non-governmental organizations, the private sector, and the legal profession, to assist with relief efforts and long-term recovery.  Disaster preparedness and response measures did not and could not have anticipated a cyclone of this intensity.  Support needs to be strengthened for the most vulnerable, particularly in the face of the increasing frequency of severe weather events owing to climate change.”

In solidarity with the people of Malawi and in support of the humanitarian efforts being made by CLA institutional members, the Malawi Law Society, the CLA is calling on all its members to contribute to the collection of funds for the victims of Cyclone Freddy using the following bank details:
